Exxon Mobile Donates Funds to Support Information and Decision Sciences Faculty
The Information and Decision Sciences Department (IDS) at the UTEP College of Business Administration has
received a gift from Exxon Mobile Corporation in support of faculty development activities.

Analyst, Dr. Leo Gemoets, Chair of IDS, Yvonne M. Reed, Supervisor for Geophysical & Geological Applications,
and Christina M. Asbell, Senior Systems Analyst.
IDS has placed many Computer Information Systems and Operations and Supply Chain Management program
graduates with Exxon Mobil over the past 12 years. These students have done very well in the leadership chain.
Exxon Mobile recently paid a visit to UTEP Business and presented a check to Dr. Leo Gemoets, Chair of the
IDS Department. In attendance were Ms. Gerallyn M. Jones, a 1998 CIS/Mgt graduate and Senior IS Analyst, Ms. Yvonne M. Reed, a 1991 graduate from the College of Engineering with a BS in
Computer Science and Supervisor for Geophysical & Geological Applications, and Ms. Christina M. Asbell, a 2000 CIS/Mgt graduate and Senior Systems Analyst.
The William C. and Lavoyne Newman and Family Endowed Scholarship

Dr. Robert Nachtmann, Mrs. LaVoyne Newman and her children Kimberly A. Newman and W. Kevin Newman with the commemorative plaque in the lobby of the Business Building.
LaVoyne Newman, William K. Newman and Kimberly A. Newman have generously created the William C. and
Lavoyne Newman and Family Endowed Scholarship in honor of William C. Newman, a graduate of Texas Western who
went on to practice law in Texas for over 50 years.
The endowement will be used to provide scholarships to the
students in the College of Business Administration with an interest in entrepreneurship.
Kevin Newman is a UTEP graduate and teaches Juniors and Seniors U. S. History, Government and World History at Chapin High School. In 2006, Kevin was nominated for Teacher of the Year.
Kimberly Newman has her Masters in Education and is a Math Specialist for K thru 5 at the Glen Oaks Elementary School in San Antonio, Texas. Kim was awarded Teacher of the Year for 2008.
The Martin Kern Strategic Career Planning Seminar

The UTEP College of Business Administration has established the Martin Kern Strategic Career Planning Seminar
thanks to the generosity of Mr. Martin Kern. This professional
development seminar is embedded in our Management 4300 class. This seminar is designed to stress the importance of student professional
development and provide strategies for improvement.
The college takes great pride in associating this outstanding student development activity with the name of Martin Kern—among the most
highly respected in the El Paso business community. To stress the importance of student professional development, Mr. Kern provided the
private support that laid the foundation of the college’s Professional Development Center. We will always be grateful for his generosity
and thoughtful leadership that launched this essential component of excellence in business education at UTEP.
Mr. Kern’s career exemplifies a life dedicated to business success, community engagement and professional development. Martin Kern—banker,
finance professional, writer, jazz musician, community volunteer, advocate of student development, and friend and benefactor of the
College of Business Administration at the University of Texas at El Paso.
