Giving to UTEP Business
Invest in the Future of Our University
Planned giving provides prospective donors with many options and can offer both
income and tax benefits. A gift annuity guarantees donors with an income stream
for life and also helps secure the future of the UTEP College of Business
Administration.
An annuity to the College of Business Administration will provide:
- Guaranteed income for life (and the life of another, if desired)
- Charitable tax deduction
- Support for future College of Business Administration students and faculty
- Flexibility, as a gift can be created with cash, securities or real estate
For donors seeking a fixed, predictable income during their lifetime, a
charitable gift annuity may be the ideal life-income gift plan. A charitable
gift annuity can be funded with cash, marketable securities and other liquid
assets. In exchange, UTEP pays the donor and/or the donor's spouse a fixed
annual income for life. A certain portion of each annuity payment is tax-exempt.
The donor receives a charitable income deduction in the year the gift annuity is
established.
For those who prefer variable income, with its potential to hedge against
inflation, the charitable remainder unitrust may be the ideal gift option. It,
too, provides a lifetime income and an immediate charitable income tax
deduction.
Planned giving is also a way for donors to maximize their estate for their heirs
while making a charitable contribution to the College of Business
Administration. A planned gift may be right for you if:
- You have considered making a significant contribution but are worried about
having enough income in your later years
- You want to ensure that you, and not the IRS, chooses where the largest share of
your estate goes
- It is important to you that future UTEP students have access to a quality
education
- You are looking for a way to create a lasting, meaningful legacy

Endowment Opportunities at UTEP

All gifts for permanent or endowed funds received by the University of Texas
at El Paso are formally reviewed and accepted by the Board of Regents of the
University of Texas System. Upon acceptance of an endowed gift, a permanent
endowment fund is established by the Board to be administered by the U.T. System
Office of Development and Gift Services. That office now administers over $5.3
billion in endowed funds on behalf of UTEP and the other components of the U.T.
System.
Endowment funds are invested in the Long Term Fund and managed by UTIMCO, the
investment management arm of the U.T. System. Distributions from each endowment
are made quarterly to the component named as beneficiary for use as directed by
the donor at the time of the acceptance of the gift. By system-wide policy, the
Long Term Fund is invested with the objective of total return. A portion of the
return is retained in the principal of the individual fund to offset the effects
of inflation and permit some growth in the fund.
The minimum amount required to establish any endowed fund is $10,000. A donor
may create an endowment with an initial donation of 20% of the donor’s total
proposed funding and a pledge for the payment of the balance within five years.
All funds that would otherwise be distributable from the endowment will be
reinvested as a permanent addition to principal until the endowment is funded
with the above mentioned minimum required funding.

Faculty Assistance Endowment
If the endowment is designated for a faculty position, distributions are made
available each year to the individual who holds the endowed position. He or she
may choose to take this stipend as a salary supplement or to use the earnings
for other purposes related to his or her work, such as support for research,
travel to professional meetings, or the purchase of specialized books or
equipment. The University has established four levels of endowed faculty
positions:
- Professorships Minimum $100,000 endowment
- Distinguished Professorships Minimum $250,000 endowment
- Chairs Minimum $500,000 endowment
- Distinguished Chairs Minimum $1,000,000 endowment
Student Assistance Endowment
Endowed scholarships provide students with funding for tuition, fees and
other costs related to academics. An endowed scholarship can be established for
a minimum of $25,000, which creates a partial scholarship.
Scholarships may be designated to a particular department or program, or be
tied to a consideration of financial need. Scholarships are usually renewed
automatically provided that the student maintains a minimum GPA and course load,
but the donor may require that the scholarship be re-awarded annually.
Endowed student enhancement funds support student academic costs beyond
tuition and fees, such as travel to out-of-town competitions or performances,
purchase of essential supplies for special projects, or stipends for research
projects.
Funding levels for various student assistance endowments are as follows:
- Student Enhancement Funds Minimum $10,000 endowment
- Academic Scholarships Minimum $25,000 endowment
- Presidential Scholarships Minimum $60,000 endowment
- Presidential Excellence Scholarships Minimum $80,000 endowment
- Graduate Fellowships Minimum $100,000 endowment
General Program Assistance Endowment
UTEP is involved in many programs that provide hands-on educational
experiences for students while benefiting the community. A minimum endowment of
$10,000 could provide discretionary funds to support any of these worthwhile
programs that the donor desires. Some examples include:
- University Library
- Centennial Museum
- Texas Western Press
- Union Dinner Theater
- KTEP-FM Radio
- Undergraduate Learning Center
- Numerous programs within the College of Business Administration, College of
Education, College of Engineering, College of Health Sciences, College of
Liberal Arts, and the College of Science.
Establishing a Scholarship at UTEP
University scholarships give students the opportunity to reach their
potential by rewarding scholastic achievement and relieving the financial
burdens associated with a college education. UTEP offered students over $8.0
million in scholarships this year, and the number of eligible candidates still
exceeded available funds. More money is needed to support Annual Scholarships,
Endowed Scholarships, and the UTEP General Scholarship.
The cost of tuition and fees at UTEP is approximately $4,600 per year for a
full-time student. To apply for a scholarship at UTEP, high school students must
have a minimum grade point average of 90 on a 100 point scale. Current UTEP
students or students transferring from other colleges must have a minimum 3.0
cumulative grade point average on a 4.0 scale. All scholarships require
full-time enrollment; some also require proof of financial need.

Annual Scholarships
If you give a minimum of $1,500 or more now, and pledge to give the same
amount for an additional three (3) years, we can award an annual scholarship. By
guaranteeing scholarship funds for four (4) consecutive years, you enable a
talented student to concentrate on his or her coursework, free from the worry
about next year’s tuition. As long as the student maintains the minimum
standards set out above, he or she will continue to receive the scholarship. You
may offer your scholarship to all qualified students, or restrict it to a
particular college, department or program.
Annual scholarships also provide special naming opportunities. The four-year
scholarship can be named after the donor in honor or in memory of a friend or family member.
Minimum funding levels for annual scholarships are as follows:
- Academic Scholarships Minimum $6,000
Payable Over 4 Years - Minimum $1,500 annually
- Presidential Scholarships Minimum $12,000
Payable Over 4 Years - Minimum $3,000 annually
- Presidential Excellence Scholarships Minimum $16,000
Payable Over 4 Years - Minimum $4,000 annually
- Graduate Fellowships Minimum $24,000
Payable Over 4 Years - Minimum $6,000 annually
Endowed Scholarships
An endowed scholarship can be established for a minimum of $25,000, which
would generate an annual award of approximately $1,000. Funds distributed from
endowed scholarships are awarded to deserving students to assist with tuition,
fees and other costs related to their academic studies.
All gifts for permanent or endowed funds received by the University of Texas
at El Paso are formally reviewed and accepted by the Board of Regents of the
University of Texas System. Upon acceptance of an endowed gift, a permanent
endowment fund is established by the Board to be administered by the U. T.
System Office of Development and Gift Services. That office now administers over
$4.4 billion in endowed funds on behalf of UTEP and the other components of the
U. T. System.
Endowment funds are invested in the Long Term Fund and managed by UTIMCO, the
investment management arm of the University of Texas System. Distributions from
each endowment come back to UTEP to be awarded as scholarships pursuant to the
donor’s instructions. By system-wide policy, the Long Term Fund is invested with
the objective of total return. A portion of the return is retained in the
principal of the individual fund to offset the effects of inflation and permit
some growth in the fund.
A donor may create an endowed scholarship with an initial donation of $5,000
and a pledge for the payment of the balance within five years. No scholarships
can be awarded, however, until the endowment reaches the minimum required
funding. Until the minimum funding level is reached, all funds that would
otherwise be distributed from the endowment would instead be reinvested as a
permanent addition to the principal.
Funding levels for endowed scholarships are as follows:
- Academic Scholarships Minimum $25,000 endowment
- Presidential Scholarships Minimum $60,000 endowment
- Presidential Excellence Scholarships Minimum $80,000 endowment
- Graduate Fellowships Minimum $140,000 endowment
General Scholarship Fund
Gifts of any amount designated for this fund will be pooled with other
similar gifts and used to award and help supplement as many scholarships as
possible each year. These scholarships will be awarded based on scholastic
performance and are available to students pursuing any field of study at UTEP.
